Venice Continues Its Winning Ways
Winning is nothing new to the Venice Indians baseball program. With six state championships under their belt, the standards often speak for themselves. but following two seasons in which the club has finished around .500, the 2024 Venice Indians have gotten off to a start more reminiscent of their expectations.
Venice has now won ten straight games to improve to 10-1 on the year. The Indians return home from their successful Spring Break trip now having matched their longest winning streak since 2016, following a win at the Columbia Tigers and a pair of victories at the Trinity Catholic Celtics. Their 8-0 shutout over the Celtics their last game was also their fourth shutout already this season.
Pitching has been the biggest difference-maker, as the Indians sport an impressive 0.89 team ERA even despite playing one of the most challenging schedules in the state. Starters Brady Schumaker and Carter Cox are both 4-0, and senior Simon Yochum has been a force in leading a dominant reliever corps. Yochum recently announced his commitment to Davidson University, and he already has 13 strikeouts in eight innings with a miniscule 0.88 ERA.
The team suffered its only loss in a tough, 1-0 defeat to the Dunedin Falcons in their first game of the year, in the Steve Georgiadis Tournament at Seminole High.
