Gulf Coast’s Niels Stone No-Hits District Rival South Fort Myers
Two of the top teams of 7A-12 squared-off Tuesday night when the Gulf Coast Sharks hosted the South Fort Myers Wolfpack. Jamie Soto led the way on offense with three RBI’s, but the night belonged to Sharks’ starter Niels Stone who was marvelous in a 15-strikeout, no-hitter that propelled the Sharks to a 2-0 district victory over the Wolfpack to stretch their winning-streak to six games.
One hit batsmen kept Niels Stone from perfection in a night that saw him need just 75 pitches to get through the game and pick up the victory for the Sharks (13-3), who remained a perfect 4-0 in district play and atop the 7A-12 standings. Stone struck out the side in four of the five innings played to pick up his third win of the year.
Stone added a spark to the offense as well with two RBIs on a 1-for-3 night. Stone joined Soto, Emil Valenzuela and Shane Marshall with multi-RBI games. All but one player scored a run on offense for the Sharks, with Weston Boling and Collin Camarigg leading the way with two apiece.
The Wolfpack (10-5, 2-3) went down by virtue of three punch outs by Stone in the top of the first inning and then quickly found themselves in a six-run deficit entering the top of the second. John Morel was the only base runner for South Fort Myers. Morel reached base in the fifth when he was hit by a pitch from Niels Stone and advanced to second on an error but that was the only blemish on Stone’s night.
The Sharks ended the game early by adding three runs in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 10. Jamie Soto led the charge late with a two-RBI double to make the score 9-0 and then, after stealing third, came around to score the tenth and decisive run in a huge district victory.
