Cape Coral Holds Off Lehigh Rally
The Lehigh Lightning hosted the Cape Coral Seahawks Wednesday night in non-district action. The Seahawks jumped out to a seven-run lead early on and managed to stave off a furious comeback from the Lightning and hold on for a 7-6 victory.
The Seahwaks (3-2) got things going quickly in the first inning with a lead-off double from Andrew Jaffarian down the left field line. Jaffarian and Tre Waltz later came around to score the first run of the game on a throwing error to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead. Another error in the next inning allowed the duo to score again to give them a five-run lead, eventually building to a seven-run lead before the next inning was over.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, two singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Lightning (0-4) who sent Nick Perdue to the plate. Perdue singled to left to bring home Michael Deltoro from third for the first run for the Lightning. Back-to-back walks with two outs and the bases loaded scored Jovany Veliz and Perdue to cut the deficit to four. By the end of the fourth inning, the Seahawks lead was now just 7-4.
Each team had a 1-2-3 fifth inning to keep the score the same entering the sixth inning, but in the bottom half of the inning an error with the bases loaded allowed Brett Marcum and Veliz to cross the plate to come to within one run at 7-6. The runs were the second of the game for both Marcum and Veliz.
However, that was as close as the Lightning got. The Seahawks turned the ball over to Matt Slater with one out in the sixth and he slammed the door on any potential comeback. Over the final 1.2 innings, Slater threw 28 pitches, allowing no hits, one walk and striking out one batter to pick up the save and secure the victory for the Seahawks.
