Canterbury Cruises To Victory To Advance To States
Two heavyweights squared off Tuesday night when the Northside Christian Mustangs hosted the Canterbury Cougars in a 3A regional final. The Cougars scored two runs in the first and added two runs each in the third and fourth inning to build a 6-0 lead and eventually hold on to win 6-2 to earn a trip to jetBlue Park.
A one-out RBI single from Michael Matter gave the top ranked Cougars (29-1) a 1-0 lead in the first. They quickly added to that lead on a sacrifice from Giovanny Lorenzo that scored Donovan Duvall from third. Two innings later, Lorenzo and Duvall combined again to help double the lead. With one out, Lorenzo singled to right to score Duvall and Tyler Shuck for the 4-0 lead.
Cooper Weiss scored the fifth run for the Cougars on a bunt single from Cooper Swanson in the fourth. Carson Smith made it 6-0 when he came around to score on an error from the Mustangs’ infield. Smith had solid night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The Mustangs (23-6) struggled against Cougars’ starter Sam Keating most of the night, only managing three hits. However, they did manage to score two runs in the fifth when Brian Fuller and Pierce Chambers crossed the plate.
Keating started the game and picked up the victory for the Cougars. He allowed no runs on two hits and two walks and struck out six batters.
