Bishop Verot Heading Back To State Final Four
Bishop Verot has become a fixture at the state tournament over the past six years. The Vikings are continuing that tradition by reaching the final four after knocking off Cardinal Mooney for the second time this season, 4-1, on Tuesday in a 4A regional final.
Bishop Verot will open the tournament by taking on Jacksonville Providence in a semifinal at 1 p.m. on May 11th.
Michael Richey went 3-for-3 with two runs, and Blaze Alexander went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Alexander singled in Gunnar Byrd, and Richey came in on Carson Smith’s flyout in the bottom of the first. Alexander hit a two-run home run that also scored Richey in the third.
“Mike and Blaze both had great approaches at the plate and were able to get their arm extended,” Bishop Verot manager David Nelson said.
The Vikings won a state title in 2011, lost in the state final in 2012, fell in the semifinals in 2013 and 14 and then came up short in the title game last year.
“Going for the sixth straight year is extremely special,” Nelson said. “We beat a good Cardinal Mooney team. Being 14-14 is not flashy but we played a tough schedule and it’s paying off. We work hard and continued to work hard when we lost nine out of eleven ball games. We are a young team that did not give up on our goal of going to state six years in a row.”
