Barron Collier Holds Off Ida Baker To Advance
Barron Collier scored two early runs and held on to defeat Ida Baker 2-0 in a 6A regional semifinal Tuesday. The Cougars (19-9) have won four in a row and advance to a regional final Tuesday against Dunedin.
Marcus Crabtree led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Billy Zeliff’s sacrifice. Marc Coffers then grounded out to score Crabtree.
Neither team managed much of anything over the next inning and a half, with Ida Baker only getting a single from Christian Proffitt.
Barron Collier then got its second run in the top of the third. After a strikeout, Zeliff hit a line-drive double to left and scored two batters later on Logan Langham’s double to right.
Ida Baker made things happen in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit. Cory Hill walked with one out, and Luke Endsley reached on an error with two outs. But Dakota Kayatta grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Ida Baker threatened again in the sixth with two on and one out. Proffitt singled, and after a strikeout, Kayatta added a base hit of his own. But the Cougars turned a double play to get out of it.
Nick Geller allowed three hits and walked two while striking out six to earn the win for Barron.
