Mariner Moves On With Hard-Fought Win Over North Fort Myers
on Monday, the Mariner Tritons put themselves in a great position to advance out of district play and into regionals in Class 6A. The Tritons received a stellar pitching performance from Daniel Varner and held on to defeat North Fort Myers 3-0 in a 6A-11 quarterfinal.
Varner pitched with efficiency for much of the day, throwing a complete game and only 75 pitches in his seven innings of work. Varner struck out five, while only walking one batter and allowing four hits. The key to Varner’s success was his command of the strike zone, pounding 50 of his 75 pitches in the zone.
Offensively, it was a combination of the top and bottom of the order that helped the Tritons push across three runs. In the first inning, Mason Eicher led off with a single, and, after an infield hit combined with an error, Eicher came around to score the first run of the game.
After that, Red Knights starter Peyton Bourque kept the Tritons off the scoreboard until the sixth. Louis Alberro singled to lead off the sixth inning. Nick Lamoureux followed with a double. Nolan Byers then singled home Alberro, and Jimmy Meredith’s base hit scored Lamoureux.
The two insurance runs were all that Varner needed, as he shut down the Red Knights in the seventh, securing a spot in the district semis.
Now the only thing standing between Mariner and the district championship game is Cape Coral. The two teams split their season series, with the Tritons winning 5-2 in the first meeting and the Seahawks returning the favor 11-9 in the rematch.
