Lely Comes Back Against Immokalee To Advance In 6A-12
The Immokalee Indians went up against the Lely Trojans in the first game of the district playoffs. The Trojans went up early and held on to the lead until the fifth inning but then recaptured the lead in dramatic fashion to win 5-4.
In the first, the Indians’ Damion Escobar doubled with two outs, but Jonothan Irigoyen was able to get a third out after striking out his first batter.
The Trojans’ starter Jonathan Irigoyen reached base after a lead off single. A hit batter moved him to third and a double steal landed runners on second and third with one out. A sac bunt from Mena scored Irigoyen and put the Trojans up by one.
A 1-2-3 inning gave the Trojans momentum going into the bottom of the second. Two consecutive singles and a double steal put runners on second and third. Jones laid down a sac bunt to bring in the second Trojan run.
The Indians could not get their bats going in the third or fourth, where their only base runner came from a hit batter.
In the fifth the Indians loaded the bases with one out after two errors and a walk. Nate Betancourt doubled to bring in two runs and put runners on second and third. A passed ball brought another run in and moved Betancourt to third. He was brought in by a sac fly from Christian Ramos. The Indians were now up 4-3.
The momentum shifted and the Trojans went 1,2,3 in the fifth and sixth. They were able to regain the control when they brought in reliever Thomas Norman in the seventh. The Trojan offense woke up and were able to score one run after four singles but stranded two runners on base. In the eighth , a pop up and two strikeouts sent the Trojans to the plate.
Left fielder Luis Diaz led off with a walk. He was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then to third after a grounder. The Trojans now had two outs and Diaz on third he would score on a passed ball to end the game.
“It wasn’t our best baseball, it was one of those that you just have to find a way to win,” said Trojan manager Greg Dombrowski. “Its not the way you draw it up but at this point in the season a win is a win.”
