Cape Coral Edges Mariner To Advance
Cape Coral’s Matt McDade and Mariner’s Andrew Arsenault staged a pitchers’ duel Tuesday as the Seahawks edged the Tritons 1-0 in a 6A-11 semifinal Tuesday.
McDade threw a five-hitter, striking out seven and walking one while Arsenault also pitched a complete game, allowing six hits while striking out three and walking two.
Cape Coral moves on to Thursday’s district title game after an RBI single by Daniel Fanego in the top of the second for the winning run. After a groundout, Luke Shultz got on with an error. Andrew Jaffarian reached base after being hit by pitch Fanego followed with a single to left to bring home Schultz.
Mariner’s best chance at scoring came in the top of the sixth with one out and two men on. After a groundout, Christian Velez singled and Andrew Arsenault followed with another single, but a strikeout and groundout prevented them from scoring.
The Seahawks (14-13) have righted the ship after posting their second consecutive win following a seven-game losing streak. Cape Coral started the season by going 8-1.
