Mason Guides Lake Placid Past DeSoto County
Justin Mason took a no-hitter into the seventh inning to power Lake Placid to a 10-3 win over DeSoto County in a 5A-12 game Tuesday. Mason pitched a complete game, striking out seven, giving up two hits and walking six as he dominated the Bulldogs’ lineup and helped the Green Dragons to their second win in a row after a four-game losing streak.
The Green Dragons (4-6, 2-2) broke open a scoreless game with a seven-run third inning. Jason Andrews got things started with a leadoff double. Angel Ojeda got on with an error before Tay Williams singled up the middle to score Andrews. Sammy Callahan dropped down a bunt single, and DJ Williams got on with a fielder’s choice that allowed Ojeda to score.
Errors allowed Mike Warner and Alan Vega to reach base, allowing Tay Williams and Callahan to score before Bailey Bevis took first on a fielder’s choice. Damian Lusby’s single brought in DJ Williams, and then Andrews got a hit for the second time in the inning, allowing Lusby to score. DeSota got Tay Williams to fly out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs (3-9, 2-2) got their first run in the top of the fourth with two outs. Robb Adams got on with a fielder’s choice and scored when Casey Rittenburg got on with a dropped third strike.
Lake Placid padded its lead with three runs with two outs in the fifth. Ojeda and Tay Williams reached on back-to-back singles before Callahan got on with an error that allowed Ojeda to come home. After Tay Williams scored on a passed ball, DJ Williams got on base with a dropped third strike and Callahan scored.
Grant Potter and Mikey Daniels scored for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh, but the Green Dragons quashed the threat to maintain the win.
