Garris, Stevens, Propel Cardinal Mooney to 5-1 Victory
Managers around the country will tell you that it’s not how you start, but instead how you finish. Even with that said, Cardinal Mooney manager Greg Mulhollen has to be thrilled after the Cougars won yet again, this time by a 5-1 final score over the Bishop Verot Vikings. Taylor Garris had two RBIs and starter Spencer Stevens pitched six fantastic innings on the mound for the now 10-1 Cougars in a game that Cardinal Mooney dominated from the start.
Stevens struck out four and allowed no walks, displaying excellent control on the mound. Going up against a Vikings offense that is always a threat, Stevens threw first-pitch strikes to a staggering 21 of 24 hitters and only threw 20 balls, all of which added up to a phenomenal outing on the hill. Josh Bonynge closed out the game for the Vikings and pitched a perfect seventh inning.
Most of Cardinal Mooney’s action on offense came in the first inning, where the team quickly put up three runs thanks to excellent vision at the plate in a frame in which they drew three walks. Garris put the team on the board with a one-out RBI single in the first, while teammate Christian Maglich had a sacrifice fly that drove in two runners. Later on in the fifth inning, Garris struck again with an RBI double that scored Tommy Hubbard from first base. Cardinal Mooney also added a fifth run by way of a Josh Bonynge solo home run in the fourth inning.
Starting for Bishop Verot was Devyn White, who only threw two innings in the loss. The Vikings’ lone run came by an RBI single from Cam Hoines, one of only four players to get a hit against Stevens.
