Uecker Throws Shutout In North Point’s 2-0 Win
Bat flips and long home runs may be the fancy thing in the majors, but as North Port starting pitcher Zac Uecker reminded us all on Thursday night, it’s good pitching that truly wins games. On a night in which neither team could get much offense going, Uecker struck out six, threw 70 percent of his pitches for strikes, and allowed just four Riverview Rams to reach base in a 2-0 victory for the Bobcats.
“Pitching and defense continued to be our strength tonight,” manager Dan Palvue said. “Zac Uecker pitched his tail off and was extremely efficient with a complete game shutout in only 75 pitches.”
Uecker was helped by first baseman Daltyn Smith’s RBI single to right in the fourth inning and smart baserunning by third baseman Charlie Topp, who scampered home after a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning. Five Bobcat starters had hits on Thursday night, while two players — center fielder Charlie Davidson and catcher Nathan Vetter — each got on base twice by means of walks. There were a total of seven walks drawn by Bobcat hitters as they showed great patience all night long.
“We came up with big hits when we needed it,” Palvue said of his offense. “I was really pleased with our effort and performance tonight against a very quality Riverview team on the road.”
Chris Schiavo threw five quality innings for the Rams on Thursday night. Schiavo struck out six and only allowed three hits as he was the hard-luck loser.
