Three-Run Sixth Leads Cypress Lake Past Mariner
Cypress Lake used a three-run sixth inning to break open a tie game and rode the arm of Austin Hayman in a 5-3 win over Mariner in a 6A-11 contest Tuesday.
With the score knotted at two, Preston Moore led off the bottom of the sixth for the Panthers by getting on base with an error. After a groundout, Austin Davis reached with a hit-by-pitch. Chase Howell’s bunt single scored pinch-runner Michael Junkin. After John Ashby walked, Tate McMenamy’s sacrifice fly brought in Davis, and Howell scored on an error to make it 5-2.
Justin Waibel scored on an error for the final run in the top of the seventh.
Mariner opened the first with a run. Waibel was brought in by Christian Velez’s double to center field.
Cypress Lake answered the next inning when Howell’s sacrifice fly allowed Moore to come in.
After a scoreless third and fourth, the Tritons (2-4) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Nick Lamoureux reached on an error that allowed Waibel to score.
In the bottom of the inning, the Panthers came charging back to tie it up. Howell singled in Junkin, and Tate McMenamy’s sacrifice fly scored Davis.
Hayman got the win for Cypress Lake, as he piled up 15 strikeouts. He allowed two runs and six hits while walking none. Closer Robert Wegielnik put away the final three outs to record the save.
Cypress Lake has won three in a row and will host Dunbar on Wednesday.
