Pitching Leads Venice To 9-1 Win Over Bishop Verot
Trevor Holloway set the tone and the rest of the Venice pitching staff followed suit to pave the way to a convincing 9-1 win over visiting Bishop Verot on Friday night. Holloway struck out seven and allowed just one walk in five scoreless innings of work to earn the victory.
The Vikings (0-2) ended the no-hit bid and the shutout when Michael Richey doubled in the sixth, scoring Trevor Cramer after the leadoff batter drew a one-out walk. But otherwise the Bishop Verot offense was held in check on the night.
The Indians (2-0) got the scoring started with a run in the second. Holloway walked and gave way for courtesy-runner Jared Bailey, who scored on an RBI groundout from Joe Kinker.
Venice put up four runs in the third for all the runs it would ultimately need. Holloway singled to drive in Brent Killiam, and Bailey and Colton Fraser both came home on an RBI double from Kinker. Kinker then scored thanks to an RBI single from Rylee Buckmaster to put the host club up with a 5-0 advantage.
The Indians added four more runs in the fourth to put things out of reach. Tyler Gardner finished 2-for-2 with two walks to reach base all four trips to the plate, and Jake Grubbs was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
