Pitching And Power Prevail For Evangelical Christian
The Evangelical Christian Sentinels powered their way past district rival Community School of Naples by a score of 4-2 on Thursday night.
Leading the charge for the Sentinels was Mike Marcelak, who batted 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and an RBI. Ben Specht also played a crucial role, striking out 13 Seahawks during six innings of mound work and also helping his cause at the plate with an RBI.
The Sentinels (4-0) went right to work in the bottom half of the first inning. After Specht struck out the side in the top half, Billy Genter reached on an error with one out and scored when Marcelak ripped a ground ball down the left field line for his triple. Marcelak then scored on another error and Ian Evans turned a base-on-balls into a run to give the Sentinels an early 3-0 advantage.
Specht continued his dominance in the second frame, once again striking out the side. He issued his only walk of the night with one out in the third, but his defense turned a double play in the next at-bat to get him out of the inning.
The Seahawks (2-2) were finally able to find some success with their second look at Specht. Starting off the fourth inning at the top of the order, Community School took advantage of two miscues by the Sentinels to put runners on the corners with one out. Preston Ott dropped a fly ball into center field to knock in Joe Lang for the first Seahawks run of the game and then scored himself when Jay Bershears reached via an error.
Genter scored his second run of the night in the fifth to finalize the scoring.
