Oasis Holds On Against Clewiston

Oasis starter Stephen Siciliano did not allow a run in his six innings.

The Oasis Sharks capitalized on some mistakes to lead them to a 3-1 victory over the Clewiston Tigers on Friday night.

“It was a team win,” Oasis manager Frank Haba said. “We did the little things necessary to win the game.”

The bottom of the third inning was a pivotal moment in the action, where the Sharks were able to continue to add to their lead. The inning began with a patient at bat by the Sharks number nine hitter, Pat Picciolo. After reaching first on a walk he advanced to second on an infield single by Nick Oliveira. A bunt by Kristian Velando resulted in a throwing error, allowing a run to score. Oliveira later scored on a single by Kevin Newton, giving the Sharks an early 3-0 lead.

“I just tried to chop it the other way because I knew I could beat it out,” Nick Oliveira said.

The Sharks (3-4) threatened to score again but a bang-bang play at home allowed the Tigers to collect their second out of the inning. Back-to-back singles by Stephen Siciliano and Denis Talarico then loaded the bases one last time for the Sharks, before Tigers pitcher Xavier Mederos collected the third out of the inning with a strikeout.

The Tigers’ defense makes a close play at the plate to get a big out.

Sharks starting pitcher Stephen Siciliano worked quickly and effectively throughout the night not. He did not allow a single run to score throughout his six innings of work.

“I was able to get them to roll over by hitting my spots on the outside corner,” said Siciliano.

The Tigers (2-2) refused to be shut out as they staged a late two-out rally in the seventh inning. Colin Roth reached base after drawing a walk. He then put himself in scoring position by stealing second base. Roth was then able to show incredible speed by coming around to score from second on a ground ball hit to the second basemen. Unfortunately, this was the only offense the Tigers had all night.

“They have got to hit the ball and play the game, If they want to win,” said Clewiston Manager Skip Crawford.
